Each year, to commemorate Remembrance Day, the Woburn Drama Department organizes a Remembrance Day Assembly. In years past, we have been honoured by the involvement of many community members, including Canadian soldiers back from different tours to share their stories and memories. The Grade 12 piece for Remembrance Day 2008 was an interpretive dance that expresses the loss felt by all in times of war and the way that grief, if we allow it, can bring us together. And perhaps, with time, we can figure out how to avoid war altogether.

This year, for the first time in many years, Woburn celebrated the start of Black History Month with a rousing Assembly! The grade 12 dancers decided to revisit the 1970's in their choreography to "September" by Earth Wind and Fire. They choreographed the whole piece themselves, with only a little help by Ms. J. during the revising period - and what job they did! With a mix of disco, Chicago stepping and many unique styles incorporated into this fun piece, the grade 12s captured the light-hearted competition of a gentler time in history while celebrating the dance clubs of our past - one of the first places Canadians of all colours mingled freely!

This is the first time a grade 12 performance class as put together an Urban-Style Dance. It is a Mafia-Inspired dance, using chairs as props, that the students enjoyed creating and performing. It is a work-in-progress and the dancers did an exceptional job, despite a technical glitch at the beginning!

In May, Woburn was invited to participate in the first annual festival open to all dancers in all grades in the TDSB. In collaboration with a local dance artist, the dance teachers created a short dance sequence that was to be used in each of the dancers. However, how each teacher had complete artistic freedom in how that phrase was to be used. So some dances used the phrase in it's entirety, others used only portions of the phrase, still others used the whole phrase in different pieces throughout the dance.
With the help of our rhythmic gymnast, Ashley, the grade 12s learned how to dance with ribbons in our "water"-inspired dance, "Droplets"
