Culturally Responsive Teaching is a form of teaching that enhances critical thinking skills and makes students feel empowered and want to share their thinking. It creates an inclusive and judgement free environment.
Culturally Responsive teaching in Math creates a safe space for students to struggle and ask for help. Students have the opportunity to share different strategies they have found when it comes to solving problems that can help others and they feel comfortable asking for help

An inclusive classroom prioritizes a students well being and making students feel valued and included in the conversations.
I can incorporate this into my classroom by creating an inclusive environment where students feel comfortable to ask and answer questions. Having students work together in small groups will allow them to get more comfortable asking questions during a bigger disscusion
Having higher expectations helps students succeed academically.Sometimes having lower expectations based on race, gender and ethnicity can negatively impact students when it comes to motivation and will in turn hinder their learning. The key is to have the same high expectations for all your students while not having impossible standards.
I can incorporate this by getting an understanding of each students individual ability and make accurate expectations based on everybody's ability.
Both teacher support and scaffolding instruction help students become more confident anf provides a way to engage and ensure success for all students.
I can incorporate this in my classroom by being able to be avalible when students are stuggling and being avalible to give students who are struggling more more time to help them understand the material to the best of their ability. I will also take the time to give verbal/written feedback that is easy to understand
It’s important for students to truly understand the material and by having in depth math conversations it allows them to do that. Doing so in a judgment free environment is also important for students to be able to ask questions when necessary.
I can incorporate this in my classroom by encouraging conversations about why we are learning this and explaining how these concepts connect to each other. I can also do this by encouraging students to share strategies they found to share with others who might be struggling.
It’s important in a culturally relevant classroom to be able to problem solve and think critically when it comes to problems. So instead of having students memorize material a teacher should try to make activities that require an explanation/math reasoning for problems.
I can incorporate this by asking open ended questions and have students share how they solved problems. Helping students gain good critical thinking skills will help them not only in future class but will help them in the real world when needed
Empowering students is the most important thing a teacher could do. Having students who feel empowered allows for higher engagement during instruction and it helps students feel confident in their ability.
I can empower students in my classroom by having them get more confident in their abilities. Students can ask each other for help before asking me for help which will enhance their understanding of the problems.
Mathematical modeling is when students use their own experiences to help engage in everyday situations of mathematical inquiry. It helps students problem solve everyday situations. By using a students culture in mathematical modeling it helps structure a curriculum around students cultures, this is the idea of culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP). This concept has become a new response when dealing with incorporation of cultural perspectives within education. CRP has three main purposes help students experience academic success, develop cultural competence, and develop a critical consciousness in order to question the status quo. The biggest problem with CRP is the limited perspective on the definition of culture and when teachers try to practice CRP they often give minority students the feeling of 'otherness'. It's also hard for teachers to understand that culture is different for everyone and they have trouble adapting it so everyone can be involved.
With Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) it's important for teachers to not only hold students so high standards but also be there to support their cultural identities at the same time. The main framework for CRT includes four things: awareness, learning partnerships, information processing and community of learned and learning environment. As a future teacher I can make incorporate these things by creating an inclusive learning environment. A challenge with CRT is the fact that it isn't universal, it looks different in every classroom, one way I can avoid doing CRT wrong is by working with my students to. create the perfect environment.
Culturally relevant teaching (CRT) was split into two broad caragories, equality and mathematical thinking. Within the education branch come cultural funds and knowledge, power and participation, and language supports. The mathematic thinking comes cognitive demand, math discourse, and math knowledge. Cultural funds of knowledge refers to the knowledge a student gains from their family and cultural backgrounds and that's why a students culture has such a big role in CRT. As a teacher you are able to use a student's previous experiance, strengths and background knowledge to enrich their understanding of concepts, keep them motivation and keep them feeling included in your classroom.
The main idea behind power and participation is the fact that our brains can't fully participate until power is balanced and we feel safe. Not feeling safe does not have to come only from the teacher, it can come from the fear of embarrassment or failure or lack of confidence. In the classroom language refers to the way students are able to talk about math, if they are able to correctly justify an answer using math language really makes a difference when it comes to students getting to fully understand the material. Being able to properpaly understand concepts correctly also helps students participate more in class since they are more confident in their abilities.
In this Ted Talk by Dr. Shelly M. Jones she talks about how important Cultural Relevant Teaching is. She discusses that their are three main goals, students being academically successful, both teachers and students having cultural competence, and the ability to have critical consciousness. She states that the main idea of Culturally relevant teaching is to empower students to challenge the status quo. In order to do so she says that the current curriculum needs to be altered to included culturally relevant teaching styles. Taking the time to learn about the students' cultural backgrounds as well as the community they grew up in is the main way yo connect with students. Jones that a common misconception with culturally relevant teaching is that teachers will in turn dumb down the content being taught, but in reality it teaches content in a way that gets students to think critically. Jones also explains that culturally relevant teaching is hard to implement as a teacher since there is no right way to do it and since it looks different with every class. She suggests that the best way to implement culturally relevant teaching is to take the time to learn about your students and figure out the best style for them.
