This is an activity passed down from one of my former biology teachers possibly adapted from the NSTA. You will need:
Colored pencils/crayons
Paper
Directions: Tell your students to draw a scientist.
As a teacher, you may question your students why they drew their scientist the way they did. More often than not, they follow this formula for the scientist's appearance:
White
Male
Middle-aged
Crazy
Wearing a white lab coat
Chemicals
As a physics teacher, as well as a scientist, it is my job to prove that anyone can be a scientist. I might ask why not draw yourself?
The biggest point that I will say, is as an educator, it's a great first day excersise or a mid-year reflection, as a bit of encouragement or reaffirming you can be a scientist.
