My name is Adia Nasir and I am a sophomore Urban English Secondary Education major. As a person of color (American-Bengali) and a future educator, my goal is to allow for my students to feel a sense of community and comfort. In order to accomplish this, teachers, students, and parents all need to team up and highlight the importance of culture and diversity both inside and outside of the classroom. I want to implement my wants growing up as a student in the public school system in order to satisfy the needs of my students. In my opinion, this next generation of teachers have the capability to reshape the controversial education system in America.
Pedagogy Explained:
Pluralism allows for all groups to hold onto elements of their cultural backgrounds and beliefs systems within a more predominant culture.
Respect for diversity should be a common denominator seen through any branch of a school system whether it be teachers, students, or parents.
Pluralism can defeat bias and conventionality which results in partisan passive attitude. This attitude allows for a forming of ideological prejudices.
Pluralism highlights a culture of diversity that develops creative progression within students and prevents the misinterpretation of the "otherness" of others.
Through this strategy, students will be able to set up an identity of unity in diversity and view discrimination and white domination as defects.
Pedagogy Applied:
In order to practice pluralism, value importance of classroom diversity first:
How? Getting to know students individually, creating a space for reflection and expression where students can present their individuality in the classroom, introducing diverse perspectives, creating an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on diversity and cultural sensitivity.
Encourage acceptance through discussion. In order for students to develop progressive thinking habits and take part in critical thinking, it is key to understand that everyone has different points of view and that it is okay. The capability to understand differing beliefs and develop healthy discussion in regards to those dissimilarities is crucial to furthering academic growth and logical thinking. Within discussion is is important to look out for word choice. Language sensitivity can help build a growth of respect within students.
Help students understand the concept of bias in an open environment such as a classroom. When allowing for students to realize that their opinions may be unfairly biased they eventually will value alternative perspectives.
Teach students the value of multicultural perspective by helping them learn about other cultures through theology, celebrations, traditions, and belied systems of people around the world.
Instead of acting as an authoritarian, students will feel more comfortable if a teacher is supporting their conversations, freedom, and passions. This allows for positive learning experiences.
Pedagogy Explained:
Assistant teaching professor in Northeastern University's College of Professional Studies, Cherese Childers-Mckee discusses the changes in students, their experiences, upbringings, and backgrounds and how this has been affecting classrooms today due to race, culture, and socioeconomic background. She teaches readers strategies on how to avoid this in future classrooms, one being culturally responsive teaching.
Culturally responsive teaching also known as culturally relevant teaching is a a research-based pedagogy that acknowledges the importance of including students' cultures, languages, and life experiences with what they learn in school.
She states “Teachers have more diverse classrooms today. We don’t have students sitting in front of us with the same background or experience, so instruction has to be different. It needs to build on individual and cultural experiences and their prior knowledge."
Benefits of culturally responsive strategies: Helping students' sense of identity, encouraging equity and inclusivity in the classroom, engaging students in the course material, aiding critical thinking.
Appreciates traditional texts.
Pedagogy Applied:
In an English classroom, it is important to appreciate traditional texts and steer away from teaching literature by generally accepted classic authors such as William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, etc. Including texts from other cultures, diverse authors, and different parts of the world help students connect themselves with the material being learned. Connecting content with past experiences allows for a positive learning experience.
“This way, students can see themselves in some of what they’re reading and not just the white, western world. The learning is more experimental, more hands-on,” she says. “Instead, you’re showing them a worldwide, multicultural community and looking for different interpretations while relating it to what it means for society today.”
Create lessons, writing assignments, and discussions based on the curriculum related to students social communities and prior knowledge.
Diversify classroom setup with authors of diverse races, culturally relevant posters on walls and bulletin boards, display words in students' heritage language in order to create an inviting environment for learners. Teachers can also post quotes, songs, pictures, etc. that connect students' outside worlds to the classroom.

Pedagogy Explained:
According to research students' ethnicity, race, and cultural backgrounds notably impact their achievements. Advancing teacher preparation can solve the issue of underachievement.
Inadequate preparation of relevant content, knowledge, experience, and training can produce cultural gaps between students and teachers.
Expectations play a pivotal role in student achievement since students are vulnerable to low expectations based on societal biases and stereotypes placed on their racial/ethnic background.
Pedagogy Applied:
Teachers should develop sociocultural consciousness along with dissect and examine the biases seen within their own day to day lives in order to properly teach about diverse sections of life in society.
Rather than focusing on curriculum and instructional practices on White middle-class students, focus on the cultural and linguistic characteristics of diverse learners. In order to do this, learn about students' past experiences, home culture, and community culture in and out of school.
By using curricular and instructional practices related to cultures of their students, schools, and classrooms become inclusive.
Teachers must educate themselves about the specific cultures of their students, how culture affects individual learning behaviors, and how to embrace their culture through their class.
Have an affirming attitude towards culturally diverse students in order to boost self confidence in the classroom.
No matter current academic performance, apply the same fixed, perceptible, and measurable implementations and behavior to all students that translate to high expectations. Some behaviors that have provided equitable and effective feedback feedback are remembering and pronouncing student's names correctly, eye contact, body language and gestures expressing that all messages from students is conveyed positively, and arranging desks to enhance interpersonal relationships.

Pedagogy Explained:
In order to further students interests as readers, teachers need to provide them with culturally relevant literature that they can see themselves in.
Learning occurs through participation in social practices.
Teachers need to expose students to cultural literature so students develop base knowledge about cultural diversity.
A culturally relevant library contains literature that represents different cultures authentically and realistically, while upholding a culturally conscious ideology. These books should contain precise information, correct application and portrayal of language protocol, and have a common experience within the storyline.
Books that are written by authors from various racial backgrounds provide students with a well-rounded selection of books that will expose them to a wide range of topics, linguistic patterns, historical information, and worldviews.
Pedagogy Applied:
Providing students the chance to read high-quality books written about people of their culture can engage their emotions and encourage them to find literature that they like.
Expose students to literature where they are able to see themselves, their families, cultures, and experiences similar to what they have experienced.
Being prepared to fix any misunderstandings by doing extra background research.
"Before reading techniques"-help students browse topic and provide background information on authors. Background knowledge can add emphasis to classroom discussions since people compare and contrast information.
During reading provide visuals, props, and artifacts to help students understanding of content.
Allow for open ended conversations after reading. Ask questions for students to answer freely, "What do you notice? How does that make you feel? Why do you think this?"

Pedagogy Explained:
Parents are in classrooms just as must as students since most of the time their behavior and teachings reflect within their kids. They influence how students go about life, think, feel, and act as primary caregivers.
If you work well with parents and guardians, not only will your job be easier, but your students also will find it easier to succeed in school.
Connections with parents help make the student feel more comforted.
Pedagogy Applied:
Create interpersonal relationships during assigned and non-assigned parent teacher conferences that make parents feel comfortable reaching out.
Help parents understand the concept of biased and guide parents how to help students to steer away from this concept.
Create a transparent classroom by allowing parents to have access to resources by making a webpage, newsletters, sending emails, and keeping in contact.
