My experience in photo 2 was very successful. It definitely moved a little faster than photo 1 and introduced some new idea, but I had a great time growing my understanding of the photography world. I got my projects in on time (for the most part) and am leaving this semester with so much more knowledge that I hope to be able to use in the future.
The most difficult part of this course for me was photoshop. Unlike other aspects of photography this does not come very naturally to me. Personally i've always enjoyed the taking of pictures more than the changing of them. Also the layout of the photoshop app is a lot to take in. There are so many tools and shortcuts to learn I found it a bit overwhelming. Despite this, my time in photo 2 forced me to work past this obstacle and although I definitely have more to learn, I feel much more comfortable with photoshop now than I did before.
My favorite project this year was the film friendship assignment. I really enjoy anything to do with film photography and the dark room but I especially loved capturing happy people enjoying eachothers company. My least favorite project would be the nothingness photoshop assignment. I struggled a bit with this one, lining up the photos and learning how to use the necessary tools, but in the end I did figure it out so it was definitely worth while.
Photography 2 has grown my understanding of technique and composition in huge ways. After learning the basics in photo 1, photo 2 brought my abilities to a new level by nailing down already introduced topics as well as introducing new ideas such as painting with developer, the creation of our collages, and much more. I have also gained much more appreciation for the work of other photographers through this class. I've come to realize how much effort and knowledge is required to be a photographer. Whether you photoshop, develop film, or even just use an iphone to capture moments there is a lot more that goes into photography than many people realise.
