Northern Pintail Swim

Colored pencil and graphite on bristol board

9'' x 12''

Artist Statement

The main idea behind this was a Northern Pintail swimming on a lake.
The materials I used were colored pencil, graphite pencil, and 9'' 12'' bristol board.

For the process, I started by looking up pictures of northern pintails, so I could get a good idea of how I wanted mine to look. I then drew quick, basic shapes very lightly in graphite pencil to get a relative idea of the general shape of the duck. After this, I started to darken the lines, and erase any unwanted ones. I added some detail, but not much as I knew I would be erasing most of it. I then went in with colored pencil. I started with the head, added the base color, then smaller details, then shading. This same process was also done for the rest of the duck. When I was finally mostly happy with how the duck looked, I proceeded to working on the background, which I didn't put too much effort into as I wanted the duck to be the main focus. Lastly, I added the reflection underneath the duck.
