Idea Sketches

Graphite on photocopy paper

Mountainscape sunset

9'' x 12''

Colored pencil on bristol board

Artist Statement

The idea that guided this artwork was a sunset over water. The materials I used were 9'' by 12'' bristol board, colored pencil, and graphite pencil (to sketch the initial drawing).  To create this artwork,  I began by considering different ideas, however I was already sure I wanted to do the first one. I also considered what materials I was comfortable using, and this is how I decided I wanted to use colored pencils. I then sketched the mountains and sun with graphite pencil, then proceeded to shade in the sun and sky with colored pencil. I started with the lighter colors for the sky, such as yellows and oranges, then got progressively darker in attempt to make the sky blend. I wasn't completely done when I moved on, but I was short on time, so I figured I would come back to it. I then colored in the letters and water. The water took me the longest because I added many layers, and this is also where the majority of the color was. After I was mostly satisfied with it, I colored in the mountains. This was when I realized that I forgot to erase the graphite, so I then tried to cover it the best  I could with the purple. After this, I went back to the sky, however, I did rush this part and didn't pay much attention to the direction in which I was coloring.
