Artist Statement: During this unit we focused on creating wire sculptures that would mimic an object that we brought in. We started out with building a 10-link tower that could stand on its own to get the fishhook wire to wire connection down. After that we started to build and try to shape the wire to become a water bottle (The object that I chose). This project was very technical and it was hard to get the wire to stay on securely but making the water bottle was relatively simple because you had to make a circle of wire , and then connect another circle of wire on top of it repeat that process to finish the water bottle, with the exception of the smaller wire circle at the top to make the cap. The process of making the water bottle started with tracing its bottom to see the size of the circles that you needed, next you had to fishhook little strips of wire to connect another wire circle on top of it. The process seems easy but when you are actually doing it it is very tedious because one mistake can set you back a long way if it isn't fixed immediately. The materials were also very simple because all you needed was wire, pliers and wire cutters. These were simply used to shape and cut the wire to make a form. The sculpture did not come out the best because there were a few loose connections but compared to the water bottle it loosely mimics its form. This leads to basically the last process you needed to do which was look back and forth between your subject (The water bottle) and the sculpture to make sure it matched which was fairly easy if you had even circles. Overall this project was probably my least favorite because of it being very tedious but I think that my sculpture turned out okay.
