Artist Statement: In this unit we focused on how to mix and create colors that could be used to show gradients in paintings. The main two projects that we did were the monochromatic value strips and the 84 color design. The value strips used one primary color and secondary color to show gradients. For each color we mixed a ranging amount of white and black into the color to create tints and shades that would be ordered from darkest to lightest to form gradients. The 84 color design project was of a similar idea but on a much larger scale. This project was open to creativity but I decided to make it abstract because I thought that it would be easier to organize and keep track of. To make these projects we used only acrylic paint with the exception of using marker if you wanted to outline your sections to make them look more bold. The paper that it was painted on was gessoed canvas which allows the paint to absorb and dry into solid color. The philosophy behind color mixing in this project was interesting to go through because each color (Specifically tertiary colors) had to be thought out in how it would be mixed. Should I mix one color into another to make this color, add one color into an existing color to make the color or should I simply add more black or white to the existing color. The process of mixing color took most of the time along with layering the paint but despite the time it took to create the project, it was a fun project to create!
