Artist Statement: For this unit a majority of our learning was based around trying to create detail, shading, and layering with charcoal and ink. I tried to create the most realistic rendering of the dog while creating appropriate shades of charcoal and ink. Another thing that ink is good for is going in and creating strict borderlines and details. I also attempted to create realism with layering charcoal and ink to create further detail and value. The materials used to create this piece of art were graphite, charcoal and ink. I mainly used the willow charcoal because it is lighter and easier to blend but for the really dark portions of the pictures background I used the compressed charcoal. I usually used the ink pen because I found that the liquid ink was hard to control the value of. I would draw out the blueprint for each square and then fill it in with the blended charcoal to layer the two medias. To make this art I had to refer to the photo reference and make sure that I was accurately depicting the puppy. The picture had many different values which I had to also accurately represent. This project was the toughest yet but it was worth it and was fairly fun.
