Assemblage Sculpture

Artist Statement: During this unit we learned about assemblage sculpture. This unit was very open ended and we could make a sculpture about basically anything we wanted with any materials that we wanted. I wanted to at first make a mushroom because I thought it would be easy to do with a cardboard roll as the stem. But then, I realized that the mushroom top shape would be hard to make with simply cardboard so after failing with that I simply replicated the fail on the other side to make it even. Next I was inspired to make a dna ladder which is what very loosely inspired this image above which I call a spiral tower. I ended up only making a tower that had spiral aspects to it and then colored it with felt. The materials used in this unit were cardboard and felt and a lot of hot glue. I cut out cardboard circles and strips, and glued them together to create this form. Next, I added color to the sculpture by hot gluing pieces of felt to the cardboard form. It was hard to cut the felt into little pieces because it would get stuck in the scissors and not get cut. The processes that I had to go through to create this were very little. Most of this unit, I simply went with the flow and created what I thought looked good. As mentioned before a few of my designs did not work out so I improvised to create new ones out of my previous mistakes. This process left me with a spiral tower covered in felt when I planned to make a mushroom covered in magazine clippings so there was a lot of changing and revising on the go. Overall, I really enjoyed this unit because it was a lot more straightforward and open-ended than other units.
