Artist statement: In this unit we learned mainly how to make color pop. We did this by shading spheres to first grasp the concept of the difference of colors because of light in 3D shapes. We also had a large focus on cast shadow and how to add that to a three dimensional figure to make the figure look more realistic. Another thing that I learned is that a way to convey realism is to blend darker colors with lighter colors to create an edge. Another way we created realism was to add white highlights to the figures to convey light casting onto it. The materials used to make this work were again very simple. However this was a great way to make the color pop and be exaggerated on the paper. Just because the materials are easy to use does not mean that there is not a super large variety of colors that you can blend and layer to convey realism. Because the partial idea of this unit was to work with color it was very fun to use colored pencils and markers in a way that I hadn't necessarily used them before. The main thing that I had to constantly reference while making this drawing was the real picture of the close up candy. I tried to recreate this as best I could but I did have to restart, which was a good decision because the second version came a out better as a result of more attention to detail. Overall this project was more fun than I expected it to be and I did improve in my skills of using color and shadows to make drawings look more realistic.
