Striped Mug

Artist Statement

For this assignment, I was tasked to research a contemporary ceramic artist and create something based off of their works. I chose to base mine off of the works of Jackie Head. Her works are filled with colorful, often symmetrical/repeating patterns that I think are quite interesting.

I created a mug using the slab technique (I think that's what it's called). I then tried to smooth the outside using a tool that I don't know the name of to make it look nicer. I'd planned to decorate my mug with multicolored geometric patterns, similar to Head's work, but, unfortunately I ran out of time, so I did stripes instead.

Before I glazed this, I thought I'd hate the outcome. But actually, I rather like it. The stripes were supposed to be black and green, not yellow, but it's still decent. My idea/mental image for this was amazing, and in reality, it didn't turn out too bad. Also, there was this amusing moment during class (Friday, 13 January 2023) when my work was bisque fired, and people were trying to guess who "BM" was. It was super obvious, but no one got it. (Also, I said that it was mine, but no one seemed to hear me.)
