Homeostasis investigation

Our goal...

For this project after recently learning more about different body systems was to delve deeper into their understanding and how they can be influenced or changed to help maintain homeostasis within the body. So for this project we were given the humans body temperature system and were tasked to explore ways to show how heart rate can change over to maintain homeostasis. To get our body temperature increased we explored a couple different form of physical exercise before landing on running. This we chose due to runnings non stop physical exercise which doesn't ever slow the body or let it cool.

Concepts:

for this project like any other there was some new terms which we would have to familiarize ourselves with, they include:

Independent variable:

this which would trigger or result in our body system changing so we had to make sure to change one specific and correct thing to produce a result for our dependent variable. for this we chose running.

dependent variable:

this variable would be well dependent or rely on our independent variable and most likely change considerable. this which was our subjects body temperature

constant variable:

Our constant variable throughout this lab was the body temperature reading taken before we made any changes to our subjects and would provide us with a base or background layer to compare to our subjects body temperature throughout the lab.

Homeostasis:

the bodies state of balance and equilibrium which can be found through intaking and excreting a variety of nutrients and other materials.

Body temperature.

Body temperature is an important system in the human body which needs to be regulated fairly well to maintain homeostasis. Body temperature which is greatly influenced by outside temperature but also by heart rate. Now while we couldn't change the weather we could change a subject's heart rate via increasing the body's need for nutrients and oxygen through physical exercise. to then test to see if our body temperature would increase we came up with a procedure and got to work.

Procedure

  1. Acquire subject(s) and take body temperature. This will be the baseline or control to base the rest of the data off of. Record temperature on table provided.

  2. Get the runner/subject to run two minutes

  3. After two minutes take temperature and repeat until ten minutes have elapsed. Record temperature on table provided.

  4. After ten minutes have elapsed, let the subject rest for two minutes then take their temperature one last time. Record temperature on table provided.

  5. Repeat the entire procedure but with a new subject until all (four) subjects have been tested.

  6. End lab experiment

Reflection

Reflecting on this project, I feel well accomplished it was my first group project again after about of year of individual work and stress and it felt good to be back working in a team and being sociable again. If this project taught me anything it was that you'll never feel as accomplished as you completing a task with full understanding and gaining a memory and a lesson behind it. This project kept me quite light on my feet for the ten minute run but also mentally focused as I was working on a teams pace not my own. Two things that didn't go well so however, were definitely setting up the poster or I suppose spelling as that was the main complaint from my team, however at least I got the time and spell check now. So in all I could say I used communication towards my group mates, and sharing the work force between them to complete the task at hand. And secondly, I used coordination or time management to make sure our team could get the most out of our one period to conduct our experiment and give each group member a turn to complete their trial/run with time to spare and evaluate our data.
