Step four
Intro
Design step four required a large influx of design and building to get our project closer to completion and getting ready to present to the world for April 28th. First we needed to set up some experiments and do some labs to find out what was necessary to build and whether what we had would be capable of our goals of delivering campus necessary materials.
What we tested:
Max payload: 3.9 kg
we deemed this acceptable since we would mostly be delivering sheets of paper and sometimes a coffee or two
Force of impact if car were to crash in to someone: 0.02 kg
relatively low and shouldn´t cause any physcial damage to people.
Elasticity of the draw system: How much it can bend before breaking: 2250 Nm
super good making our drawer system here to stay.
From this we founded our conclusion:
From our tests of elasticity and force of impact, we learned the importance of the stability of the car to ensure the cargo never falls out of the drawers or out of the cup holder. From our results, we know that the force of impact is 0.01864 N. We also know that the elasticity of the ASB plastic drawer is 2250 nm.
Our next steps will be to mount the drawer system on the base of the car and mount the 3D printed cup holder to the top of the drawers. We will do a final range and camera test to make sure these parts are working properly. We will also conduct a secondary safety test to make sure that the car won’t injure someone who comes in contact with it.
What we worked on:
simple cup holder
this was a version one and was able to fit a variety of can shaped product however we wanted something that could fit bigger beverages and be more adjustable so we created an adjustable cup holder as well.
adjustable cup holder
mounts for draw system
mock up of camera placement
still in development but figured out we could mount on the bottom of the draw system using tape for the meantime
started on electric locking mechanism
wanted a way to keep the draw closed while driving which this locking mechanism will do also a way so that people can steal goods from inside the vehicle.
Conclusion:
We´ve made large steps and can now carry a variety of goods on our vehicle from place to place. We still have tweaks to figure out such as suspension and the camera system but we´ve made massive strides not only towards reaching our goal but delving further into learning skills such as 3d modelling and innovating new designs.
Two things I think I did well was critical thinking such as designing the mounts and cup holder. Both of these were complex and interesting to design with limited resources yet have become structural and achieving their goals greatly. Secondly due to our limited supplies and time I had to do a lot of conscientious learning. I lacked at this in the start with our first design of the cup holder which used way too much filament and I didn´t get second opinions on the piece for printing which was a big learning piece for me as this has some rather large consequences such as a lacking design and used a lot of our resources. Due to this i´ve tried to increase my thinking of effects of designing and building products before putting them into production.
Two things I lacked during this step was being a collaborator and character. I struggled with lots of committments durign this period and unfortunately slacked off with collaborating from putting in time to showing a good character that gives support such that my team deserves. This effecting these important 6 Cś greatly and something that will be improved so that the whole team can be working together again.
