Am Lit Final

My American literature final:

( included "Are You Experienced" album cover by Jimi Hendrix because its cool and has awesome music)

Proficiency scales:

Conscientious learner : 3.5.

  • I gave myself this grade because throughout the school year i've always been willing to go out of my comfort zone and share opinions during class both through circle time on fridays where I keep an open mindset to different ideas and try to think from different points of views how certain ideas or principles can be viewed. Secondly I show this through my homework specifically through the books we read when I attempted to look beneath the surface at the characters and examine specific subtexts existing. The pictures below show clearly how I was able to exceed expectations in writing for at home assignments and this has transferred over as well to my jrp panel and friday circle times

Initiate and participate effectively in conversations: 3.75:

  • this is where I feel I exceptionally shine hence the high grade. I have demonstrated throughout the year during circle time, through our socratic seminars and most recently the jrp panel that I have always been initiating and participating very effectively through conversations, I always jump into the conversations and introduce what I feel are some prevalent and valuable ideas to the conversation as well as always reaching out to others to make sure all are included or attempt to give credit to others when I have a similar opinion to others that i share.

Cite strong and thorough textual evidence: 3:

  • I deserve this grade due to my consistently good ability to cite strong and thorough evidence, this can be seen through my grades of the jrp sources/validation 1 as well as my final jrp sources from my final being graded as a 3. this alongside my ability to infer the meanings of texts and examine any possible ambiguities in the text.

Write arguments to support claims: 3:

  • I deserve this grade on writing arguments to support claims due to my consistent ability to meet this same grade with both the kindred and JRP essays> i have also been able to consistently write good counter arguments with good contextualization and reasoning to refute them. One example of me doing this is in my jrp arguments below

"Social Media and Mental Health Illnesses " by Tyler Hemmings

    • Mental illnesses that would be identified through a survey made in 2017 by the Royal Society of Public Health, “ On average, they reported that these social networks gave them extra scope for self-expression and community-building. But they also said that the platforms exacerbated anxiety and depression, deprived them of sleep, exposed them to bullying and created worries about their body image and “FOMO” (fear of missing out)”sometimes taking over 2 hours each day (Daily time spent on social networking by internet users worldwide from 2012 to 2022). This clearly showcases that with social media being the prevalent and influential in our lives as well as the noticeable and identified illnesses such as anxiety, depression, F.O.M.O and cyber bulling that occur along side its clear the yes, there is a correlation and this correlation unfortunately seems to keep growing i this present day as depression and suicide rates slowly increases every year.

Integrate multiple sources of information in order to make informed decisions: 3:

  • I have demonstrated a 3 grade worthy of this due to my ability to being able to look at data and evidence through new lights and evaluate them upon them being valid and recognize their possible discrepancies. One example of this I have shown is in my lattest JRP below.

    • Thirdly with such a variably-dependent case many studies find little correlation to this as a problem and with so many other variables that could result in mental illnesses as well as studies all variably depending on age groups and size numbers. For instance, “Many existing longitudinal studies relied on relatively large samples (up to over 1,000 participants), most of them were not representative of the general population but focused on adolescents. Yet even though adolescents might represent a particularly vulnerable group, they constitute only 6% of active Facebook users (Statista, 2019).” (Stavrova and Denissen). This shows that many of these studies showcasing mental health issues can all be variably different and that most social media users aren't youths. it can’t be known for sure yet whether social media does cause this correlation

Present information, findings and supportive evidence conveying a clear and distinct perspective: 3:

  • I deserve a three on this due to my clear coherent presenting skills I was able to demonstrate during socratic seminars such as the JRP panel. this alongside my organized displaying of information which can also be seen as I can easily get to the point of my claims and allow an easy to follow method of thinking which my reader can easily understand. one example is my opening paragraph of my JRP.

    • "Right now, social media is a driving factor in decreasing young adult’s mental health, specifically this is due to the large amount of depression, anxiety and f.o.m.o, cyber bullying and a connected increase in social media usage along with mental illnesses over these past couple decades."

Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text. 2.5:

  • Finally I would say I deserve a 2.5 on my ability to locate themes and central ideas of texts. This is due to my ability to be able to recognize themes and changes over the course of a text and get a general understanding of the intended purpose and changes happening. I can also discover the characterizations of each character very well and how that fits into the general bigger message of the story. However on my most recent assignment I got a 2 on this subject henceforth the lower grade yet I still believe I should have a 2.5 due to my consistency to show these skills in previous assignments awarding me threes on kindred homework assignments.

Ups and downs:

I have done well at, being a conscientious learner and being able to initiate and participate in a variety of conversations. This was some of my main strong suits of the year and especially helped me improve my ability to publicly speak my opinions and think about ideas in different ways that I could back up with evidence or look at other evidence to see new angles.

I could improve upon. determining themes and central ideas of texts as It seems I fell off on this one topic near the end of the year due to stress and finals but look forward to working on this and learning that I need to spend more time thinking about the bigger picture in books and not just the framed outline of certain topics.
