This class is dedicated to thinking about games.
Beyond technical and craft skills, expert practitioners also have an understanding of the historical and cultural context of games. The aim of this class is to develop my critical understanding of games, as well as my ability to research, analyse, argue, present, write, and cite games theory, which in turn will help me become a more literate creative and will become transferable skills that can be applied in industry and research setting to benefit whatever company I work with or whatever project I work on in the future.
This trimester, we are working on two different successive projects (with a total of four projects). The first project is a research task on a genre, game, studio, technology (e.g. VR), practitioner (e.g. Ikumi Nakamura), style (e.g. low poly) or otherwise. I conducted a research on the local game development studio Black Lab Games, who are situated in Perth and are known for games such as Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector, Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock and Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy.
In my second project, I will to design a game project with my group from scratch (not to be confused with developing a game project), and I will then use the skills I have gained from this class—alongside my groupmates—to pitch the project.
