As the final day of COSMOS came to a close, all 13 clusters gathered one last time for the Closing Ceremony. Students, professors, teaching assistants, cluster fellows, resident assistants, and staff filled the room with a mix of excitement, pride, and the bittersweet realization that four unforgettable weeks had come to an end.
The ceremony began with a series of closing remarks from members of the COSMOS community. Professor Shaowei Chen reflected on the curiosity, resilience, and growth demonstrated by students throughout the program, while Katrina and a representative from the COSMOS office staff expressed their gratitude to everyone who helped make the summer possible. Student voices also took center stage, with representatives from the Activities Council, the Macrocosm editorial team, and several students sharing memories, words of encouragement, and heartfelt thanks. Together, their speeches celebrated not only the academic accomplishments of the past month, but also the friendships, laughter, and community that had formed along the way.
One of the ceremony's most memorable moments was a photo collage created by the Memory Book team. Filled with snapshots from labs, field trips, evening activities, performances, and everyday moments around campus, the slideshow prompted laughter, applause, and more than a few tears as students reflected on everything they had experienced together.
To conclude the ceremony, each cluster was invited to walk across the stage to receive certificates recognizing the completion of the program. Cheers erupted as every cluster was called, celebrating classmates and friends one final time. The ceremony ended with clusters gathering for group photos, capturing memories that students will carry with them long after leaving UCSC.
Although the Closing Ceremony marked the end of COSMOS 2026, it also celebrated the beginning of friendships, passions, and experiences that will continue well beyond these four weeks. As students headed off to the farewell dance and prepared for their final night on campus, one thing was clear: while the program had come to an end, the memories made at COSMOS would last a lifetime.
