Welcome to the first issue of the 2026 UCSC COSMOS Newsletter!
As the first week comes to a close, it's incredible to see just how much has already happened across all 13 clusters. From synthesizing nanoparticles and growing crystals to programming robots, exploring quantum mechanics, designing games, and studying sustainable energy, each cluster has taken its first steps into a unique field of STEM. While every cluster's experience is different, one thing has been consistent throughout campus: curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to tackle new challenges.
This issue captures just a glimpse of what students have accomplished during their first week at COSMOS. Beyond the lectures and labs, these recaps reflect the friendships being formed, the questions being asked, and the excitement of learning alongside peers who share a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
A huge thank you to all of our student writers, photographers, and editors for helping bring this newsletter together. We hope you enjoy reading about the incredible work happening across campus, and we look forward to sharing even more discoveries, projects, and memories in the weeks ahead.
Happy reading!
