Recently, because I’ve gotten bored of the dining hall meals, I’ve tried to be a little more creative. Here are a few of my successful and “work-in-progress” food combos:
The Viral Dot Cake - 8/10
Drawing inspiration from social media, I made this cake with my roommate (shoutout Ruchika!). We used two slices of pound cake, mashed it up with whipped cream, and topped it with more whipped cream, along with sprinkles, and some strawberries. The cake itself was a little dry and it was difficult to completely cover the top of the cake in order to achieve the “dot” effect. Nevertheless, we did pretty well for a dining hall recipe. It’s easy to make and also delicious!
Fruit + Chia Pudding - 9/10
While nothing special, it’s nice to have fresh fruit with yogurt or chia-seed pudding in the morning (instead of the partially thawed frozen fruit at the yogurt bar). Overall, fruit and chia pudding is a basic but delicious combo.
Bagel "Burger" - 7/10
Since I’m a huge fan of bagels, I wanted to make a hamburger using a bagel bun. However, because they didn’t have burger patties that day, I resorted to using sandwich meat. While there’s definitely potential for this combo (with the help of a little more experimentation), this sandwich was nothing remarkable.
Apple Pie + Marshmallows - 7/10
While this would’ve been tastier if the marshmallows had melted more, heating up the pie did enhance the flavor. In hindsight, though, whipped cream and vanilla ice cream would’ve been more suitable with the warm apple pie.
Fried Rice + Salad Toppings - 9/10
This combination is nothing revolutionary, but it can level up the dining hall rice. Since the hot bar doesn’t provide many vegetable options, I like to head over to the salad bar to add beans, corn, carrots, and more to my rice and meat. I’ve been missing my mom’s fried rice, and this combo reminded me of home.
That’s all I’ve got for this week; stay tuned for more food reviews 🙂
P.S.: honorable mention for my cheese pull!
