7/5: Playfair
On Opening Day, students walked to East Field to interact with other clusters and play icebreaker games. The East Field features a beautiful view of the ocean and is close to multiple fitness facilities, an excellent way to show students the campus.
Students played in a tournament of rock-paper-scissors, where the losers cheered on the winner until two large groups of students remained in the final round.
The most chaotic game featured students gathering into one large circle. RAs would say a quality like “I live in the Bay Area” or “I am in an odd-numbered cluster”. If this applied to the student, they would run across the circle to a new spot.
My favorite game was “Cruise Ship,” where an RA would say “The ship is sinking!” and students would reply “How many?” and students would form groups of the number the RA replied with. It started simple with groups of 4 and went all the way to the twenties.
7/5: Hike
Students hiked through the forested acres of UCSC and visited the koi pond. While the hike was quite long and a bit challenging, it was definitely worth the scenic views. I even saw a banana slug!

7/8: Arts and Crafts
Since Wednesday’s evening activity, bedazzling, attracted a much larger population than expected, additional options were added to satisfy the demand of the artistic COSMOS students. These included bracelet making and watercolor painting. Although tedious, bedazzling is worth the patience and can transform ordinary objects into sparkly works of art. Students left with colorful matching bracelets, sparkly items (like a bedazzled Labubu) and watercolor masterpieces!

7/10: Casino Night
Students ended the first week of learning in the multipurpose room with a casino night, offering lots of snacks, drinks and a variety of games to choose from like Uno, Pictionary, Connect Four, Chess, Poker, and Apples to Apples. Students explored a variety of activities, allowing them to interact with others from different clusters. Overall, the Casino Night was a fun way to take a break from work and form new bonds.
