Working with young adults throughout the vocational rehabilitation process requires specialized case management strategies and tools.
As the numbers of youth with disabilities being served by DVR in Colorado continues to increase, it is vital for both DVR partners and service providers such as SWAP to become competent in effectively engaging and supporting youth.
While it is impossible to address all of the unique needs/circumstances that might be encountered while working with youth with disabilities, everyone can agree that today’s youth can expect to live lives that will be very different from any previous generation. Today’s youth with disabilities are no exception to that and may present with multiple coexisting problems that will impede their availability to participate in vocational rehabilitation services and efforts to become competitively employed. All the more reason to become familiar with common issues that directly impact these individuals being served such as economic factors, foster care, juvenile justice, single parent homes, rising inequality, and more!
Just like a mission to space, there is a lot to manage:
Being aware of external factors for each individual
Identifying valuable community resources
Developing strategies for mobilizing those resources
Blending and braiding services as well as funding
Working collaboratively with family members
Embracing new approaches
Adopting new belief systems
Promoting a culture of Employment First
Thinking outside of the box and engaging promising practices
Aligning systems and strategies, not only prepares students for employment but gives them the tools to continue exploring and to go beyond!
