Summer Challenge for Families

It’s the end of another school year, and our teachers will be reminding parents and students how important it is to continue practicing math facts and reading everyday. Both of these things are necessary to help prevent a summer slide. I would like to challenge you, our families, to do two other things this summer.

The first is to spend one day each week when everyone in the family puts their cell phone away and you spend time together as a family. I urge you to watch this short five minute video about the pros and cons of cell phones, and how putting the phones down just one day a week will improve your relationship with your children:

The second is to attend Mass every week as a family. You could choose “no cell phone day” to be Sunday. Those of you with 2nd graders, I’m sure remember how excited they were to be making their First Communion. There was an article in the Record two weeks ago entitled, “First Communion, and second and third and …”. In the article, the author was speaking to parents and guardians about your role in making sure our children receive second and third communion. She quoted her pastor’s simple reminder to parents. They cannot drive. No matter how full of the Holy Spirit and alive for Jesus they are, your children cannot get to church on Sunday without your help.

I hope you all have a wonderful summer making many happy memories with your children!

Girls on the Run Registration is Open

Thanks to all the schools that have already registered to have a Fall 2022 Girls on the Run program. The lives of your girls who participate will be positively impacted by our life-changing program.

Our Fall 2022 site registration is open until July 15, 2022. We hope your school will strongly consider joining our fast-growing program that inspires and helps girls become strong and confident young women! To complete a site registration for Fall 2022, click here. To learn more about Girls on the Run, read on. Dates for the Fall 2022 season are at the bottom of this email!

What is Girls on the Run? Girls on the Run is a national non-profit organization that provides inclusive afterschool programming at over 12,000 schools and community sites across the country. Our 10-week elementary and middle school programs are designed to enhance girls’ social, emotional and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experiences.

“Girls on the Run has given our students tools, strategies, and language to be successful in all areas of their lives – from understanding the importance of physical fitness to learning how to resolve conflicts.”

– Sharon J., School Administrator

Over 2 million girls across the nation have participated in our program and we believe the girls at your school would truly benefit from the experience. In fact, a longitudinal study recently conducted provided the following evidence-based outcomes:

  • 97% of Girls on the Run participants said they learned critical life skills including managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others or making intentional decisions that they can use at home, at school and with their friends

  • Girls who were the least active at the start of the program increased their physical activity by more than 40%

  • Girls on the Run made a stronger impact on teaching life skills to participants than did organized sports or physical education.

Girls on the Run is for EVERY girl. It’s Fun. It’s Effective.

Girls on the Run uses running and other physical activities as a platform for teaching life skills and promoting holistic health outcomes for girls of all abilities. The curriculum includes lessons relevant for 3rd to 5th and 6th to 8th grade girls. Prior to the start of the program, volunteer coaches participate in extensive coach training which prepares them to build relationships with girls, create a positive, inclusive environment and support individual improvement. Coaches also receive resources and training to ensure an inclusive experience for girls with physical, cognitive and sensory disabilities. The program is delivered to small groups of approximately 16 girls twice per week over the course of 10 weeks. Lessons are 90 minutes in length and specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection, and contribution, in addition to teaching critical life skills such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions, and resolve conflict.

At the end of the program, all Girls on the Run school teams from across the area come together for a celebratory 5K event held in the Kentuckiana area. Completing a 5K gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.

Our Elementary School program is for girls in grades 3 - 5 and our Middle School program is for girls in grades 6 - 8. Girls on the Run Kentuckiana serves schools in Bullitt, Hardin, Jefferson, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, and Trimble counties in Kentucky, and Clark, Floyd, and Harrison counties in Indiana. A small sampling of schools in the area that have participated in our program include Engelhard Elementary, Holy Spirit, Lassiter Middle, Meredith Dunn, Hite Elementary, Semple Elementary, Silver Creek Elementary (IN), Southside Elementary (Shelby County), Meadow View Elementary (Hardin County), and Bloomfield Elementary (Nelson County).

Please view this YouTube video that provides many powerful insights into the developmental opportunities that Girls on the Run provides. Also, please click here to view a YouTube video with testimonials from a participant, parents, and coaches about the impact of the Girls on the Run program.

Please click here for our "New Program" guide that describes everything a school needs to know about starting a Girls on the Run program including the cost for each participant.

We would love to host a team at your school. As one of only three afterschool programs recently recognized as a top research-based social emotional learning program in Harvard University’s report Navigating SEL from the Inside Out, we want to make sure that your girls have an opportunity to participate in our transformative program. We would welcome the opportunity to set up a phone call to tell you more about the program and answer any questions you may have. Please visit https://www.gotrkentuckiana.org/ for more information or email gotrlouky@gmail.com or call us at 502-509-3273. We hope to see your registration or hear from you soon
