Anyone can take a snapshot but it takes skill to create a photograph!
This is a digitally based photography course that encourages creativity and self-expression. Students will have access to cameras, computers and studio lighting to assist them in creating photo magic while increasing their skill in camera function, composition, lighting, posing , etc. Students will increase their Media Literacy as well as improve employability skills such as collaboration, organization, perseverance, and communication.
Local business's often partner with our program giving our students the opportunity to experience real world client relationships and project fulfilment. Through hands on creative projects, activities and challenges students will become confident and capable photographers all while building a beautiful portfolio of work.
Photography 10 introduces students to the fundamentals of photography as a communication medium, emphasizing camera controls, composition, and lighting techniques. Students learn to operate cameras effectively, understand the photographic triangle (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO), and explore focal length and lens choices. The course also covers safe and sustainable practices, color balance, digital image adjustments, and legal and ethical considerations such as copyright. Optional modules provide opportunities to experiment with electronic flash and study the history of photography. Through hands-on projects and software-based image manipulation, students develop technical and creative skills essential for further study or careers in photography.
Photography 20 builds on foundational photography skills, focusing on advanced camera controls, refined image quality, and creative composition. Students expand their understanding of focal lengths, lenses, and digital image adjustments while also exploring legal, ethical, and cultural considerations in photography. The course emphasizes image manipulation techniques, critiquing photographic work, and presenting images in various formats. Optional modules introduce specialized fields such as photojournalism, advertising photography, and work-study experiences in the photography industry. Through hands-on learning and critical analysis, students enhance their technical proficiency and artistic expression, preparing for further studies or careers in photography.
Photography 30 is an advanced-level course that refines students’ technical skills and creative abilities in photography. It focuses on mastering camera settings for precise image capture, advanced digital image adjustment, and sophisticated image manipulation techniques. Students also explore legal and ethical issues related to intellectual property and ownership protection in photography. Optional modules offer opportunities to specialize in portrait photography, entrepreneurship, and professional presentation of work through digital or print galleries. Work-study options provide hands-on industry experience, allowing students to apply their skills in real-world settings. This course prepares students for further education or careers in photography and related fields.
