Band at CCHS is a full-year, performance-based course where students grow as musicians while being part of a fun, supportive team. Students build skills in playing their instrument, reading music, listening, and performing, all through hands-on music-making. Band classes are scheduled into the school timetable and alternate with a core class, making it easy to stay involved.
Band students perform regularly throughout the year, including a Winter Concert in December, a Spring Concert in June, and the Prince Albert Music Festival. Every band also has the opportunity to take part in spring trips and festivals, combining performance, travel, and unforgettable experiences with friends.
Trips & Festival Opportunities:
Band 9: Moose Jaw Band & Choir Festival
Band 10: Optimist Band Festival (Regina)
Band 20/30: Alternating trips to Edmonton or Banff, AB
Band is open to students who already play an instrument and enjoy music. No audition is required, and students do not need to have taken the previous grade level of band to join. Students in Band 10, 20, and 30 earn high school credit.
In Band 10, students take the next step by refining technique, learning scales and rhythms, and playing more challenging music. Students develop listening skills, musical expression, and rehearsal strategies while performing at concerts and festivals. Band 10 is a credit course and helps students become more independent musicians.
Band 20 challenges students with more advanced repertoire and higher expectations. Students improve precision, expression, and ensemble awareness while taking on greater responsibility during rehearsals. Opportunities include arranging or improvising music, leadership within the band, and deeper exploration of music from Canada and around the world.
Band 30 is designed for students ready for an advanced musical experience. Students work independently and collaboratively on complex music, make artistic and expressive choices, and may compose original music for band. This course emphasizes leadership, creativity, and preparing for continued involvement in music beyond high school.
