Communication Media is a digital media arts class with a focus on video, audio and interactive media production. Through project based learning students will learn how stories are told in audio and video media. Students will increase their Media Literacy as well as improve employability skills such as collaboration, organization, perseverance, and communication. Through hands on creative projects and viewing logs, students will begin to be familiar with three stages of media production: Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production.
Communication Media 10 introduces students to the fundamentals of media production, ethical considerations, and career opportunities in the field. Students explore the role of media in society, legal aspects like copyright and privacy, and the stages of media production, including preproduction, production, and postproduction. Through hands-on experiences in video, audio, and interactive media, they develop technical skills using industry-standard equipment and software. The course culminates in a production project that allows students to apply their learning in a creative and meaningful way, with optional extensions into visual and audio effects for enhanced audience engagement.
Communication Media 20 builds on foundational skills, refining students' abilities in video, audio, and interactive media production. Students deepen their understanding of legal, ethical, and cultural issues in media while refining their technical expertise, experimenting with postproduction activities, and assessing interactive media across platforms. Through more complex and sophisticated production projects, students explore innovation in technology and evaluate communication effectiveness. Optional modules offer opportunities to explore animation and work-study placements, allowing students to gain real-world experience in the media industry and reflect on their learning.
Communication Media 30 emphasizes advanced project creation, encouraging students to demonstrate critical and creative thinking in producing high-level media work for societal communication. Students refine their skills through extensive project work and engage with complex legal and ethical issues, researching the implications of intellectual property and creative works. Optional modules like scripting and work-study placements provide opportunities for hands-on experience in the industry, allowing students to deepen their technical knowledge and apply their learning in real-world settings. Students also reflect on their work-study experiences to evaluate their career readiness.
