memorial at the State Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Honoring those who died at these two camps and on this execution wall.-Alamy
After the liberation of Auschwitz, many of the freed Prisoners started to spread the idea of safeguarding the site, specifically the buildings, in memory of those who were killed. This idea of making a physical memorial actually happened in the same year that the polish parliament passed a bill for preserving the grounds and buildings of the former death camp-Auschwitz. As a result the former death camps, Auschwitz and Birkenau are now museums. More than 30 million people (all older than 14) have visited and have been educated from these horrible death camps.
We must remember and preserve the memories and stories of the survivors. We need to help educate people on what happend here because there are already people trying to say that it never happend.
Many people use the events of Holocaust to teach people the importance of understanding history and understanding the effect your actions can have on a person. There are many reasons as to why schools are required to teach about the Holocaust, but the main reason is that a repeat of the event would have devastating results. There are people out there who even deny that it happened. If this mindset proceeds to grow, we could see ourselves with another Holocaust on our hands.
