Apple TV

Apple's Airplay allows users to broadcast iPads and other iOS devices to television screens, computers displays, and projectors.

Before You Use the Apple TV

Thanks to updates with iOS 8, the Apple TV does not have to be connected to WiFi for newer iOS devices to AirPlay to it. However, we strongly suggest you do the following steps to add your Apple TV to our WiFi network.

Information to Add Your Apple TV to the Wifi

Please submit the following information to Kevin Thompson:

  • Name
  • School
  • Room number
  • Apple TV WiFi address

You can find your Apple TV WiFi Address in the Settings of your Apple TV unit.

  1. Choose Settings.
  2. Choose General.
  3. Choose Networks.

"WiFi Address" should be the second option from the bottom.

Airplay with Apple TV

In Spartanburg 2, you will likely need two devices:

  • Apple TV
  • Kanex ATV Pro dongle (for connecting to VGA ports, commonly found on projectors. You do not need this if you can connect via HDMI, commonly found on modern TVs.)

Using Airplay is very simple. Below is a video instruction of how to set it up. Step-by-step text instructions follow.

Be sure you have already submitted your name, school, room number, and Apple TV WiFi address to Kevin Thompson. See above for instructions.

  1. Plug the Apple TV into power.
  2. Connect the Apple TV to your display or projector. You will either need a splitter box next to your computer or you will connect the Apple TV directly to the projector.
Connect Directly to Projector If You Can!
By doing so, you can then toggle back and forth between the computer and the Apple TV by using the remote. This is the better option if possible in your room.

3. Turn on your display or projector. At this point, you should see the Apple TV menu on the screen. If not, be sure to choose the correct input. For projectors, the input should be "VGA."

4. Make sure the Apple TV is connected to the network "SpartanburgTwoAppleTV."

5. Make sure AirPlay is enabled. Using the Apple TV remote, choose "Settings," then "AirPlay," and make sure the AirPlay setting says "On." If it says "Off," click the setting to turn it on.

6. Make sure your iPad is connected to "Spartanburg Two." (NOTE: THIS STEP IS DIFFERENT THAN APPLE'S OFFICIAL SUPPORT PAGE.)

7. Click your home button on the bottom of the iPad twice so that you see your recent apps.

8. Click on the recent apps bar and scroll to the right. You should see an audio control along with an icon to connect to AirPlay.

9. Click the AirPlay icon.

10. You will see all of the Apple TV units in your building. Click the appropriate Apple TV device, likely named a room number. You will see a check next to the device once you have chosen it.

11. Turn Mirroring on by sliding the button from left to right. You should now see your device mirrored on your display.

The display will now broadcast your iOS device on the screen.

The AirPlay Icon Does Not Appear on Your iPad

If the AirPlay icon does not appear on your iPad, you will likely need to forget the network on the Apple TV.

1. Using the Apple TV remote, go into the menu.

2. Select "Settings."

3. Select "General."

4. Select "Network."

5. Select "Wi-f" at the top.

6. Select "SpartanburgTwoAppleTV"

7. Select "Forget Network"

8. Click "menu" on the Apple TV remote to return to the General menu.

9. Scroll to the bottom and select "Restart."

10. Once restarted, go back to the General Settings.

11. Choose "Network"

12. Choose "WiFi" at the top.

13. Select "SpartanburgTwoAppleTV."

Once you see "Connection Succeeded," restart your iPad and continue the setup process at step 6 in the AirPlay Text Directions.

Multiple iOS Devices Connecting to One Apple TV Unit

Any iOS device can do these same steps and take over the Apple TV broadcast, a feature that can be both useful and frustrating.

To keep other devices from taking over the Apple TV, you may want to put a password on the Apple TV device. To do so, follow these steps.
