As part of ongoing efforts to improve the University’s posture against cybersecurity threats, the IT department has invested in a tool to add additional security to your computer. This new product, Druva Insync, is aimed at offering additional protection against ransomware attacks by making a secure cloud backup of your computer’s critical data. Ransomware is malicious software that, once installed by hackers, can prevent access to your data unless a ransom is paid. These types of incidents have grown in frequency, and can be extremely damaging and costly to organizations.
Druva is one of many tools employed to protect the campus in our layered approach toward cybersecurity. You will be receiving an email from “inSync Admin (cloud.admin@druva.com)” inviting you to sign in to the Druva app to start the archiving process. The IT department has been remotely installing the Druva client to your computer over the past week. In this case, you can ignore the “download” option in the email you received (please see the attached image of a sample Druva email).
To launch the Druva InSync app,
On a Windows device: Click the inSync icon shortcut on your desktop or in the system tray.
On a Mac device: Click the inSync icon on the Menu bar or Launchpad.
Please note these parameters:
Druva accounts are only for your SU-owned, primary (office) desktop or laptop.
Only SU-institutional data is to be backed up. Druva backs up and can restore your user files. Other than user specific hidden files, this is your Desktop and Documents folders for both Macs and Windows PCs.
Mapped department drives, Google Drives, and Dropbox/OneDrive are not included as these have separate backup methods.
Other files and folders, such as the Operating System and applications, are not archived.
Certain file types will be excluded. These include pictures, videos, temporary files, cache files.
Files and folders you created on your local hard drive that are not in the Desktop or Documents folder will not be archived.
If you have a hard drive failure, lost laptop, or malware infection going forward, the IT department will reinstall the default OS and applications on your primary device. Signing in to Druva will then allow you to restore your personal Desktop and Document files.
