Wearable UV Detection Device

This project is a Wearable UV Detection device that alerts users when to reapply sunscreen or get out of the sun. The purpose of this device is to assist the user in preventing sunburn and any complications of sunburn. Over 3 million Americans per year are affected by skin cancer, so it’s imperative that we provide an option to help people be smarter about how much time they spend in the sun. In order to do this, the device has a UV sensor whose output gets sent to a microcontroller that determines the current UV index based on the sun’s rays. The microcontroller uses bluetooth to send this UV index to an Android app. Within the app, the user fills out a one time profile about their skin type. Whenever the user applies sunscreen, they input what SPF sunscreen they applied and their time of application. The app takes into account the user’s skin type, the SPF level, and the current UV index and starts a countdown for when reapplication of sunscreen or getting out of the sun is necessary for skin protection. Once the countdown is complete, the app sends a notification, so the user is aware that their skin is now in danger.

The group would like to thank their faculty sponsor Roobik Gharabagi for their support of this project.
