The performing arts is an emerging setting for the athletic training profession. Performing artists face similar pressures to athletes in traditional sports settings and can benefit from the presence of an athletic trainer (AT) involved in their healthcare. Similar to traditional athletes, artistic athletes often risk severe injury, perform through pain, have few off days, and face job competition. The purpose of this study is to better understand athletic training within the performing arts. To complete this research, a case study interview of a Cirque du Soleil Athletic Trainer/Therapist was done in March 2020. The interview was conducted and voice recorded over Zoom and then transcribed. From the interview five themes were identified: job satisfaction, job stress, collaboration, education, and specificity of injury. Sub-themes were identified through a literature review and analysis of the interview transcript. Factors such as potential for advancement and working with an effective healthcare team contribute to job satisfaction. Stressors can be reduced through clear role expectations and autonomy within the workplace. Communication and relationship building are necessary skills for effective collaboration when working with a diverse group of athletes and healthcare providers. Performers are negatively affected by uncertainty and ATs need to educate athletes on prevention and expectations. Many injuries are chronic and functionality is the top priority for performers to return to work. Overall, ATs in a performing arts setting face similar issues as athletic trainers in other settings and they can positively impact outcomes for performing artists.
