HydroGraphD

Hydrology is the field of science that studies water properties and movement. Researchers often use hydrographs to study discharge over time at a specific stream and its separation into baseflow (groundwater discharge) and event flow (runoff water due to precipitation).

Our goal is to design and implement an application that works as a hydrologist research tool by automating the creation of hydrographs. Using dynamic URLs, the website obtains current data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) and provides two options for the researcher: a period analysis and a custom graph. The analysis scans through the data to find time ranges where precipitation has occurred and outputs recommended graphs. The custom graph allows researchers to view the hydrograph of any suitable USGS site number and date range.

Currently, hydrologists do not have a tool to easily visualize these graphs. They manually collect data and graph it themselves. HydroGraphD aids researchers by offering downloadable data, suggested date ranges, and presentable graphs -saving them valuable and freeing up their workload.

The group would like to thank their faculty sponsor David Ferry for their support of this project.
