TruStride

Over 800,000 patients are hospitalized because of fall injuries, and the medical costs total over $50 billion annually. Our idea is to develop a gait training system using wearable sensors to reduce fall risk for patients. By focusing on improving patient gait rather than making an alert system for medical care after a fall has occurred, we are taking a preventative approach to reduce fall injuries. Our design consists of a belt clip and two shoe insoles which house inertial measurement units, force sensors, processors, and a user interface. Our system, named TruStride, is designed to be worn by patients who are identified by physical therapists to have high fall risk such as elderly patients, patients recovering from injuries, patients with neurological disorders, and patients who have previously fallen. TruStride will detect metrics of patients’ gait and provide information to both the patients and the physical therapists to improve patients’ walking form. TruStride will help patients become proficient and confident in their walking ability.

Brendan McGreal

Brendan McGreal is studying Computer Engineering at Parks College, with a minor in Computer Science. He is from Berea, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Aside from being dissapointed by Cleveland sports, his interests are playing guitar, video games, and reading. After graduation, he will begin working in the Technology Development Program at AT&T as a Software Engineer.

Evan Capelle

From Highland, IL, Evan Capelle is majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Mechanical Engineering for his Bachelor's degree at Saint Louis University. He is a published author for research in robotics, and is interested in a wide range of material science, biomechanics, and electrical engineering. He plans to do product development in the orthopedic medical device industry after graduation.

Lauren Ketelhohn

Lauren is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is studying Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, Lauren plans to return to Milwaukee to work in the medical device field. Lauren enjoys hiking, soccer, and tennis.

Collin Fricke

Collin Fricke grew up in the average American city of Peoria, Illinois before he moved to Saint Louis for undergrad at SLU. He is completing a major in Biomedical Engineering and a minor in Health Care Ethics in the spring of 2021. After graduation, Collin will be working as an Emergency Medical Technician for a year before matriculating to medical school. He is interested in camping, traveling, waterskiing, and Pokémon Go.

Julian Saliba

Growing up in New Orleans, Julian Saliba found a passion for excellence at a young age. However, he went to Saint Louis University and studied Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science. After graduation, Julian will continue his education in hopes of earning an engineering PhD. Outside of academia, Julian enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, fishing, and traveling.

The group would like to thank Dr. Roobik Gharabagi for their support of this project.
