Welcome to the 2021 Senior Legacy Symposium!
Opioid abuse is a massive national health crisis that continues to grow. The economic burden for this epidemic is estimated to be over $70 billion per year. Reliable detection of drug use and withdrawal is critical for those involved with the treatment of substance abuse. Current methods, such as urine samples, have significant limitations. Clinic teams have a large patient load, burdensome clerical tasks, and limited patient data. Patients have infrequent visits with their care team, which are too short, and lack the inpatient care resources to properly treat their condition. These failures have real consequences: poor quality of care, relapse, and oftentimes death.
Opisense is a solution that provides real-time noninvasive health data collection and streamlined event analysis to enhance clinical decision making. The biosensor itself measures heart rate, respiration, skin temperature, and electrodermal activity. Each of these parameters can indicate both withdrawal and abuse episodes. Raw data is then fed to the Opisense application via Bluetooth, where it is stored, processed, analyzed, and compiled for the patient and their care team.
Nicole Bajerek is senior at Saint Louis University, and will obtain her bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering in May. Following graduation Nicole hopes to visit her grandparents in Poland. In July Nicole will begin a position as a Technology Consultant and RSM US. She has cherished her time at SLU and is excited to start this new chapter of her life.
Mariam Akbani is a senior at Saint Louis University studying biomedical engineering with a minor in engineering mathematics. After graduate she has plans to work in the healthcare industry as a bridge into medical school during her gap year. When she is not studying, Mariam enjoys spending time with friends, traveling, and being outdoors.
Annalise Hilker is from Edwardsville, IL, and is a senior at Saint Louis University studying Biomedical Engineering. Upon receiving her bachelors degree in May, she will begin as a Technical Solutions Engineer at Epic Systems following the summer. Annalise is excited to move up north with her dog, Bear, and explore all the parks and hiking trails.
William Speciale is a senior at Saint Louis University studying biomedical engineering with a minor in computer science. Post-graduation he has plans to work in the healthcare industry with a focus in applied data science.
Kenji Yanaba is a senior at Saint Louis University finishing his undergraduates in Computer Engineering with minors in Computer Science and Engineering Mathematics. In his free time, he loves playing tennis, doing outdoor activities, and programming. He will graduate in May 2021 and is excited to take his coding skills into action.
The group would like to thank Dr. Gary Bledsoe for their support of this project.
