Welcome to the 2021 Senior Legacy Symposium!
The Rider Alert System (RAS) is a system designed for sensing and alerting a user to hazards while walking, running, or cycling in order to help improve the safety on roads, trails, and paths. The goal of this system is to effectively detect an approaching biker or runner from behind and to alert the user to move out of the way in the quickest time possible to keep the user safe. The proposed system design consists of seven main components: a small raspberry pi camera, a Nvidia Jetson Dev Kit microcontroller, an Arduino Nano, a motor controller, an ERM motor, a wrist mount for the alerting components, and a back mount to house the sensing components. The RAS will work by integrating the components by using the camera to sense the subject, then using the Jetson to run the image recognition software and relay it to the Arduino Nano. This will then send a signal via USB connection to the motor controller which will activate the vibrating motor accordingly depending on the distance of the approaching runner or biker. Once the hardware and software work, the proposed course of action is to train the software to become as accurate and efficient as possible at detecting either a biker, runner, or other potentially hazardous object that could bring harm to the user.
Michael is a senior Biomedical Engineering student at Saint Louis University with a Pre-Medical emphasis. Originally from Lake St. Louis, Missouri, he enjoys the outdoors, rock climbing, snowboarding, playing basketball, working out, and spending time with his friends. After graduation, Michael plans on continuing my work as a Medical Scribe for a gap year before attending medical school.
Stephanie is a senior biomedical engineering student at St. Louis University. She is originally from Jefferson City, Missouri. Stephanie enjoys hiking with my dog, playing pickleball, spending time outdoors, and being with her friends. After graduation she plans on attending Washington University to pursue a Master's in biomedical engineering.
Eric is a Senior at Saint Louis University, Majoring in Computer Engineering with a Minor in Computer Science. He was born and grew up in Naperville, Illinois before coming to St. Louis. Eric have a love for music, e-sports, robotics, and more technologies. After graduation, he plans on continuing his education at Washington University in St. Louis to pursue a Master's in Electrical & Systems Engineering.
Suzi is a senior at Saint Louis University doing a Biomedical Engineering major and an Engineering Math minor. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri and has been here her whole life. Suzi enjoys taking walks outside, working out, playing basketball, and hanging out with her friends. After graduation, she plans on finding a job in the medical devices field and eventually going back to school for her masters.
The group would like to thank their faculty sponsor, Dr. Gary Bledsoe, for his support on this project.
