Welcome to the 2021 Senior Legacy Symposium!
North Side Community School is a public charter school that seeks to care for the whole person while providing a quality education. At North Side I worked with the school social worker to promote social and emotional learning in a virtual setting due to COVID-19. Prior research has shown that self-reflection is highly effective in promoting healthy behaviors in adolescents (Browne, Gafni, Roberts, Byrne, & Majumdar, 2004), so my work in the Google Classroom focused on interventions that encouraged students to reflect on their own perceptions of themselves and their lives rather than simply conveying information to them. By promoting self-reflection, I hope to have influenced behaviors oriented towards self-esteem and positive relationships with others while also serving as a consistent adult mentor to my students. All of these factors contribute to flourishing, which includes holistic wellbeing rather than simply an absence of illness or distress (VanderWeele, 2017).
