2021 Senior Legacy Symposium

Dear Saint Louis University staff, faculty, alumni, parents, and friends:

The Senior Legacy Symposium is SLU's annual celebration of undergraduate scholarly and creative work. Since 2008, this event has provided a platform for distinguished students from all majors to share their culminating academic achievements with the campus community in the form of research posters, oral presentations, artistic exhibitions, and musical/dramatic performances.

Last year we made the difficult decision to suspend the Symposium as the country grappled with the implications of COVID-19 and the closure of the St. Louis campus. In lieu of a symposium, we created a digital abstract collection so students nominated could be recognized for their scholarly and creative accomplishments at SLU. This year, with social distancing still dictating our campus lives, we faced the threat of another year with a diminished Symposium experience. Given all our students have sacrificed over the last year, we did not want to see that happen.

Building on lessons learned from last year's digital abstract collection and inspired to create a more immersive experience, the University Honors Program (which has organized the event in recent years on behalf of the Division of Academic Affairs) strove to create a more robust online experience. As in past years, we invited departments/programs from across the university's undergraduate schools and colleges to nominate up to three students for inclusion in this year's Symposium. Nominated students were then given the chance to share their work in multiple ways (abstract only, full artifact submission, or video submission). Below you will find over 100 projects organized by school/college and then by individual department/program.

Just as last year (and, indeed, for the last 14 months at SLU), Honors Program staff and partner offices have shown incredible commitment to recognizing
the scholarly and creative accomplishments of graduating seniors who have persevered through unprecedented circumstances during their time at SLU. This website is the result of that commitment, the generous cooperation of faculty from across the University, and the active participation of students who were nominated by their home departments/programs. Special thanks also goes to University Honors Program graduate assistant Ciara Pink for her design work bringing the site to life.

I invite you to peruse the impressive list of projects from across disciplines and to join me in celebrating this impressive group of graduating students.

Sincerely,

Robert J. Pampel, Ph.D.
Director, University Honors Program

Interdisciplinary Student Panels

In addition to submitting project details for the website, all nominated students were offered the opportunity to take part in a series of live discussion panels to share insights gained during their research. These panels feature a cross-section of disciplines, giving students and guests the opportunity see and appreciate the impressive range of research and scholarship our students create at SLU.

A full schedule for the three days of panels is available by clicking the button below.

Projects by School/College

All projects will be organized by college/school, then by individual department. Click on a school or college below to browse projects by discipline, or enter a student or project name in the search bar (upper right corner of the page).

Please note, all undergraduate departments/programs were invited to nominate up to three projects (individual or group) for the Symposium. Not all departments/units claimed all three spots. In addition, nominated students were invited to contribute to this online compendium of projects, but participation was optional. Therefore, not all departments/programs will feature the same number of projects.

Also, the presentation of results within each department/program page is by nominated student, which means some departments/programs with group projects will appear to have more than three results, but only because multiple student names will lead to the same final project page. By accessing the site navigation drop-down menu at the top right, you can filter down to the projects within each department/program.

Finally, the format of student submissions will differ according to student preference. Students could participate by submitting an abstract alone, a full artifact of their work (with an abstract), or a recorded presentation of their work (with an abstract).

If you are a department/program representative and do not see a project for a student or group you think should be included among the abstracts below, please contact
legacy@slu.edu. Please note, in the brief biography for each student, we have used gender-specific pronouns only when supplied by the student. Otherwise, we have opted for the gender-neutral "they/them/theirs."
