April 14 - simultaneous bloom times

Post date: Apr 14, 2012 2:01:38 PM

2012 weather recap: a wonderfully warm March gave way to early blossoms, about 5 weeks early;

So far, April frosts and lack of rain gave pause to rapid growth in the woods, and in many cases extended the bloom times.

Plants seem smaller and less robust than normal, but many are in bloom all at the same time, which is sort of cool- rain is in the forecast.

Right now, we have Redbud, Flowering dogwood, White trillium, Prairie trillium, Virginia bluebells, Celandine poppy, Greek valarian, Shooting stars, Violets, Wood anemone, Cutleaf toothwort, Trout lily and Woodland phlox all in bloom at the same time- quite a show.

Very good germination on Solomon's plume this year- we look forward to the increase in mass.
