2016 Mar 11 - sandhill crane migration

Post date: Mar 12, 2016 3:30:32 PM

March 25 is our typical date for burning the prairie, but today was warm and dry, with a very slight breeze, so we burned today.

The prairie had a lot of fuel from the previous season, and it burned very well, opening up the ground for new growth, and hopefully deterring unwanted plants.

The entire time we worked, we were treated to flock after flock of sandhill cranes flying overhead. There was never a time when we did not hear their distinctive call. The populations are certainly on the rise, what a wonderful sight. They were all flying in a northwest direction.

Overall, a great day connecting to nature, caring for the land and witnessing thriving wildlife overhead.
