Here's what to do on a Laptop if your locked out of the BIOS because of an administrator password that you don't know.
1. Make sure the laptop has the right hour/date.
2. On powering up, press F1 to get the System information. Take a picture of if.
3. Make sure USB storage devices are allowed by Notebook security Policy. If not you can use HP's SSM tool to reset Bios settings (it won't erase the passwords). If you do this, make sure the clock/calendar is still right!
4. Make sure the USB drive available in the boot menu. (Test by pressing F9 to bring up boot menu.)
5. Open a case with HP
Information that will be required:
a. Your name
b. Phone Number with alternate phone Number + available hours
c. Company Name
d. Shipping Address with zip code (Physical Address)
d. Problem description: "NEED BIOS SECURITY RESET: lost password" + "We can't access the bios on the laptop because of lost admin password. USB booting is allowed on it. I need a SMC.BIN file."
e. Computer Model, ex: Probook6570b
f. UUID (You can get this from the picture you've taken of the system information)
6. HP is supposed to send you back a file that must be named SMC.BIN . (The one they sent me was named: SMC_2015-08-17@10-03-16-FOR-ASIAPACIFIC_pdeepa.SMC. I had to rename it)
7. EITHER: have a usb key handy that's formated FAT32, OR GET the UEFI tool from HP and run it. (It is supposed to create a D:\ Partition named HP_TOOLS.. If it does'nt do it manually.) Copy the SMC.BIN file to the usb key or to the HP_TOOLS folder.
8. Once you have it. Close the computer, Keep Pressing DOWN+UP+WINDOWS keys until HP logo, then press F10. If it worked, you'll have a "SMC command succeded" message. wait a few seconds until you get in the BIOS, then press on "Reset BIOS security to factory default". then save!
DONE!
Now... maybe you should put a BIOS administrative password on that laptop so you don't have to restart it again?!
NOTE: the SMC.BIN file is good only for 1 computer (created withe the UUID), and for a limited time.
