South Carolina is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is the 11th smallest state at 32,020 square miles and the 23rd most populated with over 4.9 million residents. It was the 8th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788 and the 1st who voted to secede from the Union in 1860. It was later readmitted to the U.S. in 1868. It is known for it's coastline, historic sites, Souther plantations and so much more. It is also know for being named in honor of King Charles I of England, who originally formed the colony. It was part of the original 13 colonies that formed the U.S.
Charleston, SC earned the nickname, "The Holy City" because there are over 400 places of worship.
The Civil War began in 1861 at Fort Sumter in South Carolina after Confederate soldiers opened fire on the Union soldiers guarding the sea fort.
The tv show Gullah Gullah Island was filmed on St. Helena Island in South Carolina .
It produces more peaches than Georgia. And in the town of Gaffney (where Frank Underwood, in House of Cards is from), there is a large landmark water tower that is in the shape of a peach.
It is the only state in the U.S. that grows tea.
It is home to the oldest and best preserved plantations in the U.S., Drayton Hall.
