Mississippi is a state located in the southern region of the United States. It is the 32nd largest state at 48,430 square miles and also the 32nd most populated with over 2.9 million residents. Outside of the Mississippi delta area, is heavily forested. Before the American Civil War, most of the state was developed along the river fronts. But after the clearing of the Delta, flooding started to increase along the Mississippi. It became the 20th state to join the U.S. in 1817.
