Map

Overview

The map screen is used for various map-related features, like pinpointing stop or vehicle locations.

You can get to the map from other areas of the app that start specific functions on the map, or use controls on the screen to start new functions as needed.

Usage

The map screen employs the familiar 3D Google Maps powered by Google Maps V2.

You can pan around my dragging on the screen.

You can zoom in by double-tapping on the screen or "pinching out" (drag two fingers from the center away from each other).

You can zoom out by "pinching in" (drag two finger from the opposite corners towards the center).

You can also control zoom by first double-tapping the screen then moving your finger up or down.

You can change the angle at which the map is viewed by dragging with two fingers.

You can rotate the map by touching the screen with two fingers, then rotating them about the center of the screen.

If you've toggled on "My Location", use the button on the upper-right of the map to move the map to your device location.

Stop Markers

If the transit system in question supports it, stops can be plotted on the map to show their exact location and are represented by stop markers. Stop markers can be active or inactive.

Inactive Stop Markers

When you tap an inactive stop marker, the map centers on that stop and a popup window shows the transit system the stop is for, the stop's name, and all the routes that serve that stop.

If you click the info balloon above the stop, the stop becomes active and balloon switches to show predictions at the stop. In addition, route paths for all routes that serve the stop are shown, along with vehicles running for those routes, if the transit system supports it.

Active Stop Markers

When you tap an active stop marker, a popup window shows the transit system the stop is for, the stop's name, and loads Predictions for all routes at that stop.

Additionally, if the transit system supports vehicle locations, all vehicles that are running for the routes served at the stop will be plotted on the map.

If you have enabled the option in the Settings, the screen will pan and zoom out to show the next arriving vehicle (or whichever is closest if that's not known).

Vehicle Markers

If the transit system in question supports it, when a stop is activated, vehicles can be plotted on the map to show their exact location and are represented by vehicle markers.

Each marker indicates the vehicle's route at the top.

Additionally, if the transit system in question provides the data, the markers will also show the vehicle's current direction.

If you tap on a vehicle marker, you can get more information on that specific vehicle, like its upcoming stops.

If you click on the balloon over the given vehicle, you can get predictions for which stops that vehicle will approach next.

NOTE: Whether this information is available depends on the transit system in question.

Routes

You can plot the paths routes take on the map.

Most routes have 2 paths: north and south, or east and west. However, this can vary depending on how the transit system presents its route path data.

Once loaded, the first route path will be plotted on the map and then the map will pan and zoom to show the entire route on the map.

Some transit systems report their route path data as one continuous set of points with no clear path direction, start, or end.

In this case you see that the map simply depicts all known paths traveled by a route.

Action Bar

Stops

Select this option to view the Stops control that lets you search for stops or view a list of all stops already plotted.

Hit the Find Stops button to search for more stops in the current viewable area.

If stops are located in the search, they are added to list of stops shown on the map.

A popup message lets you know how many new stops were found and how many previously hidden stops were re-shown.

All stops found are initially set to inactive, as described above.

Once you've found stops, the action bar button displays them all, grouped by transit system.

From this list you can hide individual stops from view or delete them completely from the map.

Select a stop to quickly jump to it on the map.

Routes

Select this option to view the Routes control that lets you plot routes or review the ones already on the map.

Hit the Add Route button to find a new route to plot on the map.

Once you've added one or more routes to the map, the action bar button displays them all, grouped by transit system.

Each route shows one or more variations (like north vs south or east vs west) that you can toggle between.

You can only show one variation of a route at a time. Selecting one deselects the one currently selected.

When a route is selected, the map pans and zooms to show the complete route.

Vehicles

Select this option to view the Vehicles control that lets you see a list of all vehicles being shown on the map, grouped by transit system then by route.

From this list you can hide individual vehicles, or all vehicles for a route or transit system or delete all vehicles for a route from the map.

Select a vehicle to jump to its location on the map.

My Location

Select this option to move the map to your current location and show a marker representing your location and accuracy of the fix.

Toggle My Location

Toggles the map's GPS functionality to pinpoint your location on the map. Turn this off to conserve battery.

Clear All

Select this option to clear everything from the map, including any vehicles, stops, or routes.
