This was written in May, 2005. It's only partly true.
Lyrics
They got an SUV and a TiVo,
A big screen TV in the gazebo,
Got the wine and pate, it's gonna be a fine day
‘Cause They’re gonna put on their show.
Got a freshly imported yard.
Gave the gardeners their own credit card.
That sod is so green, it’s meant to be seen,
Makes it look like they worked so hard.
“Gonna get on the garden tour.
Gonna come in first for sure.
Gotta stay in the race, let’s rebuild the place,
Give it that extreme alure.
Build a brand new redwood wall.
Make it ten or twelve feet tall.
Keep out the riff-raff, let in the best half.
Let ‘em see that we’ve got it all.”
They’re the yuppies next door.
They’re a terrible bore.
It ain’t up to me, but the neighbors agree
That they’d rather not see a lot more
Of the yuppies next door.
They use a lot of ‘lectricity,
Light the place up so folks can see
They’re doing so well, and no one can tell
That they’re nearly in bankruptcy.
Consumption is their game.
It’s how they’re gonna make their name.
They’re deeply in debt but they ain’t done yet
They’re gonna make it to the hall of fame.
They’re the yuppies next door.
Can’t afford to be poor.
It ain’t up to me, but the neighbors agree
That they’d rather not see a lot more
Of the yuppies next door.
They got an SUV and a TiVo,
A big screen TV in the gazebo,
But their spirit is dead, they got dust in their head
And I think they don’t even know.
They really ain’t got no sense
But they’ve got collection agency statements.
They’re running so fast, they think it can last
And denial is their best defense.
They're the yuppies next door.
Just can’t help keeping score.
It ain’t up to me, but the neighbors agree
That they’d rather not see a lot more
Yuppies next door.
