In the summer of 2001 I was sitting by a lake with my friend Wade Blair talking about country songs. I had been musing about how it would go if someone, instead of crying about some loss, was really glad to see the end of a relationship. I sang a chorus, Wade threw out a line, I added one, and we were singing the chorus again when our friend Cesar walked by and gave us a strange look. We assured him that it wasn't about him, then got distracted with something else. Later, I wrote down a few lines, but it never went anywhere until twelve years later, when it decided to be a song. So, Wade, I think I wrote this with you. And it's not about you. Or you either.
Lyrics
There once was a time when our future looked bright.
There were wonderful days, there were long lovely nights.
But that time has gone now, leaving nothing but lies.
So get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
All I had sought was a love that was true
And I had thought I had found that with you
But you stepped on my heart and you taught me to cry
So get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
Good riddance. Goodbye. Good riddance. Goodbye.
Get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
You cracked up my truck and you murdered my dog.
Your mother, I swear, smells just like my hog.
When I reach out to you you just spit in my eye.
So get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
You've been sleeping all day and you stay out ‘till dawn.
Our credit accounts are way overdrawn.
You won’t get a job. You just want to get high.
So get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
Good riddance. Goodbye. Good riddance. Goodbye.
Get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
My friends they all say that your illness won’t heal.
Just getting away is a hell of a deal.
I know that they're right so I won’t even try.
Just get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
I watch as your back disappears down the road.
Each step that you take lightens my load.
When you're far out of sight I will be satisfied.
Just get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
Good riddance. Goodbye. Good riddance. Goodbye.
Get out of my life. Good riddance. Goodbye.
