Notes - Today in class you all received a new copy of the syllabus. We ended up running out of enough time to go through all the events in the reading. However we did some very important groundwork in discussing and thereby gaining an understanding of just how insane the times were, and what actually caused the revolution, in terms of the social, economic, and political atmosphere. This is more foundational to our understanding of the whole and it is quite alright that we didn't get through all the happenings in the reading. That being said, I do not want us to get too behind and bogged down by going over things two classes after we read about them. Therefore, as there was quite a bit we did not cover, I will be sending you an email with a brief little outline of the events in our reading. Do not, however, take my provided outline as an excuse to begin diminishing your preparations for class in futuro (I will not always provide an outline when we do not cover something :) Things are always much more jolly when we can really delve into them, rather than simply outlining the reading, and that requires all to be generally solid on the events contained therein.
Week 1
Tuesday:
Today we discussed the beginning of the scientific revolution and the enlightenment. Very few people did the reading for various extenuating circumstances. As a result our class was a little rushed and disorganized in an effort to cover all the material. Two central figures that we definitely need to cover at greater length are Hobbes and Lock.
HW - Read: Zehnder, pg. 34-38 & 41-52. Complete QR 1-2 pg. 68 (do not bother with QR pg. 39). Also Read: Coursepack, Johnson, Intellectuals (on Rousseau)
Notes - I will be gone for a wedding so Miss Gabriella will be substitute teaching until Friday the 19th. As most of the class did not get a chance to do the QR, due on the first day, it has been marked as extra credit for those who did complete the homework.
Friday:
Today we reviewed the homework in the reading which covered some of the Enlightenment in France, Prussia, and Russia.
HW - Read: Zehnder, pg. 53-66. Complete QR 3-4 on pg 68.
Week 2
Tuesday:
HW - Zehnder ch. 3, 69-79 and 82-85, Pg. 90 QR 1-5.
Friday:
HW - Read: Zehnder pg. 91-109.
Notes: I will be gone this coming Friday and you will again have a substitute teacher. Because I will not be there on Friday, you now have your quiz on Tuesday not Friday.
Welcome to the new year. Syllabus coming soon! :-) Meanwhile, here is the assignment for the first two days:
Wednesday, Sept. 10: Read Zehnder, Light to the Nations, introduction (pgs. 1-18) and complete the Questions for Review at the end of the chapter/intro.
Read: pgs. 21-34
Friday: Read Zehnder, pgs. 34-38 and pgs. 41-52. Complete the Questions for Review on pg. 39 and questions 1-2 on pg. 68.
Read this chapter from Johnson's Intellectuals (on Rousseau): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pQxR_sI1kEVkCnqAdiB240TlPQVWMl_4/view?usp=sharing
Your summer reading (Gheon's Secret of St. John Vianney) will be incorporated into the course in November, so you're welcome to delay until it's closer to that time (e.g., read over fall break), as long as you're sure that you will have time to complete the book (130 pages).
