Week 5

Congratulations on your midterms and have a lovely and restful break!
Week 5
Tuesday:
HW - Study!!! Midterm on Friday.
Dear All, here is the new paper prompt for your next paper.
Tell the story of the French Revolution up through the execution of the king, concluding with a long final paragraph that evaluates the Revolution (what was good and what was bad about it? how do we see the bad ideas playing out?). Narrating well can be challenging; you must determine what are the main events, leave out of the story less important matters, and describe what you do include in enough detail that the story makes sense and flows logically. Ideally, you include an occasional comment in your narration that points forward to your evaluative conclusion.
Dear All, here is the Study Guide. I am so sorry it is late. There was some confusion between me and the other teachers regarding the study guide that had to get cleared up, resulting in this unfortunate delay. Perhaps we can have some additional extra credit! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mBNkC8MbENB3-lUN7R3MIZIO7KNqhevBkHAm3Ms3oVA/edit?usp=sharing
Here is also some additional aid for the essay questions. You might have already received this, but if not I think you will find it most helpful. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1i9RbXQbhDM2M5I5Eg6ROPGj2N5TSTZ6cGdidnX6g76I/edit?usp=sharing
Week 4
Friday:
HW - QR, pg. 120 (old chapter – good review) Read: A. Carroll, 323-34 (a short review) Study!
Notes - The study guide is having trouble sending. If I haven't gotten it to send by tomorrow evening, I will just type the whole thing into the Bulletin Board.
Week 4
Tuesday:
HW - Read: Zehnder pg. 129-143. QR, pg. 145-146.
Week 3
Friday:
HW - Read: Zehnder pg. 123-129.
Week 3
Tuesday:
HW - Read: Zehnder, pgs. 110-116 & Coursepack, Declaration of the Rights of Man, pgs. 1-2
Notes: Today you all received new syllabi, as the dates were offset in your old ones (THANK YOU RITA!). We also had our first paper due today in class. Next Tuesday we will have a quiz on the assigned reading.
Week 2
Tuesday:
HW - Zehnder ch. 3, 69-79 and 82-85, Pg. 90 QR 1-5.
Friday:
HW: Read Zehnder pg. 91-109. Paper 1 due.
Notes - I was talking to Miss Cocker and she mentioned that in her class, students had not been aware of the paper due on Tuesday.
A couple things in light of that: First, always remember to check your syllabus for these due dates. We briefly spoke of the paper before I left, and it should not have come as a surprise to anyone. That being said, I do understand that things have been confusing with the in and out of teachers this last week. Second, I mentioned that we would have a quiz next week, either Friday or Tuesday. Friday you will have a sub so we will not have a quiz on Friday, and you will all be rushed with HW on Tuesday if you did not realise you had a paper due. For that reason, we will not have a quiz this week. We will have a quiz on Tuesday, September 30th, the week I return.
Week 1
Tuesday:
Today we talked about the beginning of the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution. We did not have time to discuss Hobbes and Lock and we will hopefully return to them later.
HW - Read: Zehnder, pg. 34-38 & 41-52. Complete QR, 1-2 pg. 68. (Do not bother with QR pg. 39)
Notes - I will be gone at a wedding so you will have Miss Gabriella as a substitute teacher until Friday the 19th. A discrepancy was discovered in the Syllabus concerning the papers. We will iron that out when I get back. In the interim know that you do have a paper due on September 22nd.
Friday:
Today we reviewed the homework in the reading which covered some of the Enlightenment in France, Prussia, and Russia.
HW - Read: Zehnder, pg. 53-66. Complete QR 3-4 on pg 68.
Welcome to the new year. Syllabus coming soon! :-) Meanwhile, here is the assignment for the first two days:
Wednesday, Sept. 10: Read Zehnder, Light to the Nations, introduction (pgs. 1-18) and complete the Questions for Review at the end of the chapter/intro (5 of them).
Read: pgs. 21-34
Friday: Read Zehnder, pgs. 34-38 and pgs. 41-52. Complete the Questions for Review on pg. 39 and questions 1-2 on pg. 68.
Your summer reading (Gheon's Secret of St. John Vianney) will be incorporated into the course in November, so you're welcome to delay until it's closer to that time (e.g., read over fall break), as long as you're sure that you will have time to complete the book (130 pages).
