Our midterm exam will be Friday, November 7th. To prepare for the exam, be sure to review and study the material from Chapters 1-7. Use Review I (pages 49-51) to help you prepare.
Vocabulary from Chapters 1-7
Know the present tense verb endings (-o, -s, -t, -mus, -tis, -nt) and how to translate them.
Example:
Porto - I carry Portamus - We carry
Portas - You carry Portatis - You all carry
Portat- He/she/it carries Portant - They carry
Identify the gender of Latin nouns (masculine, feminine, or neuter). See page 34 for an explanation.
Example:
Puella (girl) and villa (country house) are feminine nouns
Servus (slave) and ramus (branch) are masculine nouns
Latin adjectives must agree with the nouns they modify in gender, number, and case.
Example:
Puella Romana - The Roman girl (Romana has an -a ending because it is modifying the feminine noun puella)
Puer Romanus - The Roman boy (Romanus has an -us ending because it is modifying the masculine noun puer)
Distinguish nouns in the Nominative Case (subject) from nouns in the Accusative Case (direct object). See pages 40-41.
Example:
Singular Plural
Nominative Puella Puellae
Accusative Puellam Puellas
Nominative Servus Servi
Accusative Servum Servos
Nominative Mater Matres
Accusative Matrem Matres

When completing homework assignments, begin a new line for each question/number in the exercise and be sure to write neatly and legibly.
Week 1, September 9th
We began our study of Latin this semester by reading the first Latin story from Ecce Romani. Everyone did a great job of working through their first Latin translation!
While reading, we took note of the ways in which Latin word order differs from English word order. We will rely primarily on the ending of the Latin words, rather than their order in the sentence, to determine how the word is functioning.
We will begin most Friday classes with a short quiz on the vocabulary and concepts that we are working on. We will not have a quiz this Friday, however.
Homework:
Please complete Exercise 1b from Ecce Romani for Friday.
