Week 7
Wednesday:
Today we talked about the causes of the American revolution. We framed this class according to the question: "Was the American revolution justified/a good thing". We discussed the problems underlying the taxes issue and the failure to recognise the colonialists as equal citizens. We discussed the different understanding of both Freedom and the source of authority, by which (among other things) the French and American revolution differed. We talked about the justification of the endeavor, while understanding that immoral actions were (as always) committed on both sides. We discussed the Boston tea party, the battles of Lexiton and Concord. We talked about the long endeavors on the American side to solve the problems without bloodshed. Finally we tried Thomas Aquinas as a devils argument against the American revolution, to finally vindicate the American revolution.

Week 3, Day 1:
Today we had a quiz! After the quiz we discussed the founding and settling of New France. We learned how Francis I sent various explorers, Varrezzano, Cartier, Champlain, to explore New France for wealth. These explorers advised settling the land to substantiate France's claim to the land. However, it was only finally with Champlain that efforts to do so were successful. We discussed how the process was slow due to its low impact style, with many French becoming trappers. This nevertheless aided the extremely profitable fur trade, and so brought much needed revenue to France. We discussed how the French were beset at different times by both the Iroquois and the English. Finally we began to discuss the Jesuits in New France.
HW - Read: Ch. 4 pg. 81-90. Continue reading Champlain.
Notes - I said in class that you would have Miss Korkes for your substitute teacher on Friday. I misspoke. The South Lyon students have Miss Korkes. You all will have Dr. Brown! Also, there is some homework that is overdue for being returned to you all, I am working on gathering it from the substitute teachers . . . and I hope to have everything back to you by next Wednesday.
Week 2, Day 2:
Today in class we discussed Juan de Padilla and Father Junipero Serra. We also discussed how the blood of the martyrs does more for the salvation of souls than even the greatest natural means. This is the wisdom of the saints, which far surpasses that of the world.
HW Read: CH 4, pg. 69-80. Complete Checkpoint Q's pg. 90, 1-7.
Notes:
There is a Quiz next Tuesday! Also, as these past weeks have been a little confusing with different teachers, I am not requiring you to read the handouts on Junipero Serra and the Snowshoe priest. I will provide them later as an optional supplement. In the same vein, I will be gone this coming Friday (Thankfully this is the last time) and you will again have a sub.
Thirdly, I will be sending out an email giving the due date for everyone's presentation soon, once I have had a chance to look at all the ones that were chosen!
Finally, If you have questions about missing homework or other concerns about homework or your presentation, please email me so that I can address those concerns. I talked to a couple of you after class but please still send me an email to make sure I do not forget anything. I will try to respond promptly.
Have a splendid weekend :)
Week 2, Day 1:
Today we had a quiz, and then reviewed the "Conquistedors for Christ". We talked about the state of New Spain as a mixed bag — lots of good, but also plenty of abuses. There was only so much that the kings/queens could do. We looked at the life and work of de Las Casas. The Church did a lot of good work, and heaven also reached down powerfully through Juan Diego. Finally we talked a little about how Mary is an Aztec to the Aztecs, and a red-haired lady in Knock, Ireland, etc., and how that's a good thing, including if she's a white woman to Europeans.
