Week 10
Wednesday:
We started off in class with a quiz, after which we got to the reading. We learned about the Louisiana purchase and the adventures of the corps of discovery, led by Merriweather Lewis and William Clark. We learned that they also explored Oregon which was not part of the Louisiana purchase, and was contested between the United States and the British. When they finally reached the mouth of the Columbia river they built fort Clatsop in which to pass the winter before returning to the east. We closed with talking about the rising tension between the US and Britain before the war of 1812. These tensions were caused primarily by the refusal of the British to respect American shipping and by their habit of impressing American sailors into service with the British fleet.

We discussed George Washington's warning to the states concerning political parties and other things and how his prophetic warnings have proved themselves true in modern times. Finally we briefly covered Mad Anthoney and the Indian wars over Indiana and Ohio.

After much discussion the two main parties of the convention were reconciled by the Connecticut Compromise and the constitution was ratified within the convention. We discussed the necessary separation of powers outlined within the constitution, their importance and fittingness, as well as the brilliance of the Connecticut Compromise itself. Finally we discussed how it was ratified among the states in large part due to the federalist papers.

Wednesday:
Today we talked about the causes of the American revolution. We framed this class according to the question: "Was the American revolution justified/a good thing". We discussed the problems underlying the taxes issue and the failure to recognise the colonialists as equal citizens. We discussed the different understanding of both Freedom and the source of authority, by which (among other things) the French and American revolution differed. We talked about the justification of the endeavor, while understanding that immoral actions were (as always) committed on both sides. We discussed the Boston tea party, the battles of Lexiton and Concord. We talked about the long endeavors on the American side to solve the problems without bloodshed. Week 3, Day 1:
Today we had a quiz! After the quiz we discussed the founding and settling of New France. We learned how Francis I sent various explorers, Varrezzano, Cartier, Champlain, to explore New France for wealth. These explorers advised settling the land to substantiate France's claim to the land. However, it was only finally with Champlain that efforts to do so were successful. We discussed how the process was slow due to its low impact style, with many French becoming trappers. This nevertheless aided the extremely profitable fur trade, and so brought much needed revenue to France. We discussed how the French were beset at different times by both the Iroquois and the English. Finally we began to discuss the Jesuits in New France.
HW - Read: Ch. 4 pg. 81-90. Continue reading Champlain.

Have a splendid weekend :)

Finally we talked a little about how Mary is an Aztec to the Aztecs, and a red-haired lady in Knock, Ireland, etc., and how that's a good thing, including if she's a white woman to Europeans.
