Week 3
Tuesday:
Today in class we had our first quiz! In class we learned about the exploration and colonization of New France. Frances I sent explorers such as Verrazano and Cartier to the new world to look for gold and a northwest passage through America to the Indies. These explorers advised settling the area to substantiate France's claim to the land. However, it was only finally with Champlain, the father of New France, that efforts to do so were successful. Coincidentally, the English also sent Henry Hudson at about the same time to look for a northeast passage. We discussed how the process was slow due to its low impact style, with many French becoming trappers. This nevertheless aided the extremely profitable fur trade, and so brought much needed revenue to France. We discussed how the French were beset at different times by both the Iroquois and the English. Finally we began to discuss the Jesuits in New France.
HW - Read: Ch. 4, pg. 81-90. Also start wrapping up with Champlain.
Notes - Today I handed out a new copy of the syllabus as some of the dates were offset.
Week 1
Tuesday:
Today in class we discussed the first discoverers of America. We talked about those who found it without the discovery becoming known to the rest of the world and the impetus for their voyages. We then talked about the finders of America who opened up the new world to the rest of Europe. We discussed the human difficulties they faced, and the goals of their voyages.
HW - Read: Chpt 2, pg. 25-43. Complete Checkpoint Q's: pg 44, 1-5. Start reading Champlain.
Notes - I will be gone at a wedding, so you will have Miss. Gabriella as a substitute teacher until Friday the 19th. Also, some of the students did not read the email giving their first assignment. As a result, the study questions which were due for the first class are now extra credit for those who did do them.

Today we reviewed pgs. 25-43 in ch. 2 "Conquest of the New World," and questions at the end, 1-5.

HW Read: CH 4, pg. 69-80. Complete Checkpoint Q's pg. 90, 1-7.
Notes:
There is a Quiz next Tuesday! Also, as these past weeks have been a little confusing with different teachers, I am not requiring you to read the handouts on Junniperro Serra and the Snowshoe priest. I will provide them later as an optional supplement. In the same vein, I will be gone this coming Friday (Thankfully this is the last time) and you will again have a sub.
Thirdly, I will be sending out an email giving the due date for everyone's presentation soon, once I have had a chance to look at all the ones that were chosen!
Finally, If you have questions about missing homework or other concerns about homework or your presentation, please email me so that I can address those concerns. I talked to a couple of you after class but please still send me an email to make sure I do not forget anything. I will try to respond promptly.
Have a splendid weekend :)
